problem
Juggling multiple commitments can be overwhelming and result in neglecting self-care.
As a new post grad, I often felt overwhelmed and frustrated juggling a full-time job and a demanding 20-hour-per-week bootcamp. I was sacrificing sleep, meals, and social interactions to keep up with my commitments. The constant pressure limited my ability to pursue other interests and hobbies, leaving me feeling drained and dissatisfied.
This unsustainable lifestyle raised questions about the true cost of career success, and I began to question whether pursuing my career at the expense of my well-being was truly fulfilling.

DISCOVERY
white paper research
I was curious about the relationship between excessive commitments and decreased life satisfaction, which led to the discovery of a study conducted by psychologist Dr. Megan Arroll, revealing that…
“many individuals struggle to relax and unwind, even during breaks and vacations.”
key findings
The survey, involving over 2,000 adults, explored factors affecting relaxation and stress levels.
market research
My analysis of six productivity apps highlighted a common emphasis on task management and organization. However, I observed that the ease of adding tasks could contribute to information overload, even with well-organized lists.
I sought to design a solution that promoted single-task focus and realistic goal setting to enhance users' chances of achieving their objectives and improving their overall productivity.
screener survey
I identified 3-5 participants who were experiencing high levels of stress and had multiple commitments.
I highlighted the most promising candidates for user interviews.
user interviews
I had two primary goals for conducting 5 user interviews.
user personas
minimum viable product
My research and observations above led me to…
identify three key pain points that would shape my MVP:
PAIN POINT #1
User interview participants struggled to define and prioritize "me time."
Key insight: Users don’t really know how to rest – an indication of lack of self-care
MVP #1
Tailored To-do List
Help users establish clear boundaries by organizing tasks into Work/Rest categories.
PAIN POINT #2
User interview participants are obsessed with creating to-do lists, but they weren’t getting things done
Key insight: Productivity apps have no use if the task isn’t executed.
MVP #2
Timer Feature
Implement an accountability system for the user to accomplish their daily tasks
PAIN POINT #3
Inconsistency in maintaining a healthy work-life balance
Key insight: healthy work-life balance = healthy well-being
MVP #3
Track Progress
Help users stay motivated, build consistency, and measure their achievements
PROCESS
MVP 01 tailored to-do list
My initial approach to creating a tailored to-do list involved…
limiting task creation by visually representing the user's daily schedule.
After guiding the user to establish their ideal Work-Rest ratio, the app would determine a fixed number of hours for each category to be achieved daily, preventing burnout while ensuring goal attainment.
MVP 02 timer feature
The hardest part is starting.
The goal is to encourage users to start working or resting by pressing the "Start" button, initiating a focused Pomodoro timer session. This time-based approach provides a manageable and motivating structure, helping users stay focused and productive.
MVP 03 progress tracker
Consistency is the key to success.
To develop a healthy habit or pursue a long-term goal, staying committed and consistent is essential for achieving your desired outcome. Consistency helps you build momentum and develop a sense of discipline that allows you to push through difficulties and setbacks. It also helps you maintain focus and avoid distractions that can derail your progress.
key feature onboarding process
Through usability tests, I learned that the onboarding process is crucial for helping users understand the unique concept of this mobile app.
UI DESIGN
user interview insight
Four out of five participants appreciated support during stressful times.
This inspired me to create a brand voice that is supportive and encouraging, similar to a friend cheering you on.

learnings
As my first case study, I gained valuable insights into the entire UX design process, from research and ideation to design and testing.
A key takeaway was the stark contrast between the developer's perspective and the user's experience. By observing users navigate the app, I identified previously overlooked elements and made intentional changes to enhance the user experience.
